Peter Selwyn

Peter studied Modern Languages at Cambridge, then piano at RAM. He began his career as a member of the ENO music staff, before moving to the Royal Opera, where he worked with some of the world’s great singers and conductors. He has a repertoire of over 120 operas, of which he has conducted over 70, for UK companies including Opera North, Welsh National Opera, English Touring Opera and Opera Holland Park and in Australia, Singapore, Hungary and the Czech Republic. 

During 8 years in Germany he worked as Head of Music and Kapellmeister at Staatstheater Nürnberg, spent a season at the Hamburgische Staatsoper, and assisted for three seasons at Bayreuth. He co-founded and for nearly 20 years was co-Artistic Director of the Internationales Kammermusikfestival Nürnberg. 

An experienced and passionate Wagnerian, he has worked on numerous full Ring Cycles, at Bayreuth, ROH, Nuremberg, Strasbourg, Longborough Festival and with the LPO. This summer he conducted the first production of a Wagner opera at Opera Holland Park  The Flying Dutchman.  In the last few years he has conducted Jonathan Dove’s innovative reduction of the Ring Cycle for the Grimeborn Festival at the Hackney Empire, Tristan und Isolde, Die Walküre and Siegfried for the London Opera Company and  Parsifal Act 3 for Temple Music Foundation. He also spent two summers in Bayreuth assisting on the current Ring Cycle.

Increasingly active as a symphonic conductor, he has worked with a large number of  professional orchestras across UK and Europe, including Nürnberger Philharmoniker, Orchestra dell’ Teatro Communale di Bologna, Orchestras of Opera North and Welsh National Opera, City of London Sinfonia, Aurora Orrchestra and Southbank Sinfonia.. Alongside his position as Principal Conductor of the Lambeth Orchestra, he is Music Director of the London Opera Company and has just been appointed Music Director of the Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra. He is a Professor at the RCM and a regular coach on the Jette Parker Artists Programme at the Royal Opera, where he also works regularly on the music staff. 

Current and future plans include Götterdämmerung with the London Opera Company, and various concerts with the Lambeth Orchestra and Royal Tunbridge Wells Symphony Orchestra.
